Land Navigation: Declination & Pace Calculator

Convert a map bearing to a compass bearing, get your back azimuth, and count your paces.

Your Leg

Default 14.0 W suits New York's Capital Region and Hudson Valley, where declination runs about 13.1 to 14.8 degrees West. Always confirm the current value for your exact location before a trip.

Most adults fall between 62 and 68. Calibrate yours on a measured 100 m course - the workbook shows how.

Rules used: with West declination, Grid to Magnetic = ADD the declination; Magnetic to Grid = SUBTRACT. Back azimuth = azimuth +/- 180. Pace adjustments: +10% moderate slope, +20-25% steep slope, brush, or snow. Totals multiply the unrounded adjusted rate and round only the final figure - the same convention as the workbook, so the two always agree.
